OVERVIEW
One of the most iconic British sports car manufacturers of the 1960s, Triumph was well known for their open top sports cars, in particular the TR series. Beginning with a 1965 TR4A with the desirable independent rear suspension (IRS), this Triumph was treated to a full bare metal restoration in 2012-2013.
During the restoration, it was decided to “backdate” some cosmetic areas to the earlier TR4 for aesthetic reasons. The most striking was to use the early metal dash instead of the wood from later cars. On the exterior, early TR4 front grill, lights, and early bumpers combine to show the classic lines of the early the early Triumph TR4.
The car was repainted in period correct Triumph “New White”. The body panels are all very straight with nice even gaps throughout. Paint was done to a high standard. The exceedingly rare alloy backlight with a Surrey Top was retained and restored as well, and features original Triplex glass. It comes with both the hard and soft tops, as seen in pictures below.
The interior was fully refurbished (seats, carpets, trim) including the above mentioned metal dash. All new weather-stripping, felt seals, window channels, etc. were fitted during the restoration. New wiring was installed, along with rebuild of all electrical components as needed – wiper motors, alternator, switches, etc.
The engine, drivetrain, braking system, and suspension were all fully rebuilt during the restoration process. The engine starts easily cold or warm, and emits no smoke. The engine pulls smoothly through the rev range, with no hesitation, or hiccups – the SU carbs have been fully rebuilt as well. The distributor (an original Lucas item) was gone through by the experts at Advance Distributors. An Offenhauser alloy valve cover is fitted currently, and a standard cover is included if preferred. A new stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted as well.
Rolling stock is comprised of properly painted Dayton 60 spoke wire wheels with 165/15 tires, under the fresh suspension. Of note is a Blind Moose tube shock conversion kit in the rear, along with Koni shocks at all four corners, making for a supple and sporty ride.
Driving this car is a treat – it is fully sorted and ready for weekend touring. The 4 speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and precisely, and in conjunction with the Laycock overdrive, 80 MPH cruising is not an issue. The Surrey Top system allows for increased driving comfort with limited buffeting in the cockpit during high speed jaunts.
Having covered less than 3,000 miles since the restoration, this car is in exceptional condition, with all items fully sorted. This car is an excellent example of the mid 1960s English sports car, and ready to create a smile wherever you go.
